clinamen v.10, 2012-2025
circular platform made of medium, hydraulic system, white porcelain bowl containers
Since the beginning of this year's summer, the Clinamen v.10 has been on display in the Rotunda of the Bourse de Commerce in Paris. An aquatic and musical installation filling the space on an unprecedented scale and in harmony with the building's architecture, which was designed by Tadao Ando. The way the light filters through the dome creates an enchanting ambiance that complements the installation perfectly, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in a sensory voyage.
Taking inspiration from Epicurean physics, the title "Clinamen" refers to the random movement of atoms, a concept that reflects the ever-changing and unpredictable nature of the work. The artist, Céleste Boursier-Mougenot, has installed an 18-meter-wide basin filled with water, which reflects the sky through the museum's dome. This innovative design not only enhances the visual appeal but also serves as a canvas for the interaction of sound and water. There are more than 200 white ceramic bowls of various sizes floating on the blue surface, producing melodious, enchanting sounds as a gentle current pushes them along. Visitors can listen to the harmonious blend of nature and art, further deepening their engagement with the installation. And that is what makes this installation so unique. Each sensory experience is intended to be unique for the visitor and constantly renewed. Céleste's work explores the boundaries between daily life and art. In this case, the repurposed bowls have been transformed into sophisticated instruments that produce sounds that the artist has referred to as 'living' since the 90s and that require no human intervention. Each sound emerges spontaneously, resonating with the essence of the environment and the presence of the spectators.
Céleste establishes a subtle dialogue between matter, architecture, and human presence, creating a distinctive and thought-provoking artistic experience. He creates an environment in which art is both an individual and a collective experience, allowing each visitor to contribute to the ongoing narrative through their mere presence and interaction with the installation. It’s a reminder of how art can serve as a bridge between the personal and the universal, allowing us to reflect on our roles within the larger tapestry of existence.
Clinamen v.10 is on display until September 21st.
