Counting the Rice

Marina Abramović is a Serbian conceptual and performance artist best known for her intriguing performance art, which explores the relationship between audience and performer and the possibilities of the mind. At the Paper Tube Studio-Centre Pompidou Metz, Marina presents Counting the Rice, a unique and profound participatory action in which the work is constructed through the endurance and engagement of the visitor. Seated at a carefully arranged table, visitors are invited to patiently sort grains of rice and lentils, a simple yet deeply meditative gesture that requires focused attention, rigorous discipline, and heightened self-awareness.
