This summer artist studio visit was unexpectedly delightful. The studio is situated inside a stunning Croatian medieval fortress, and also one of a prominent filming location for the iconic Game of Thrones movie series. To reach this artistic haven, we walked through an impressive 1 km stretch of ancient medieval stairs bathed in warm sunshine and the pleasant heat of a summer's day. As we made our way along the winding steps, each one seemed to tell its own story, leading us deeper into a captivating realm of artistic potential and historical significance. Upon finally arriving, we found ourselves in a very unique studio, a hidden gem nestled snugly inside the historic, architecturally significant St. Vitus Church, enveloped within the ancient, picturesque surroundings of Klis Fortress. This enchanting location exuded an atmosphere rich with creativity and inspiration, making every moment spent there feel magical and unforgettable. The melodies of the past echoed gently around us, mingling seamlessly with the vibrant energy of the present and igniting our spirits with the promise of profound artistic exploration.

During our visit at the fortress, we had the delightful opportunity to meet Ivo Buliga, a self-taught painter and talented artist. Born in Split, Croatia in 1969, he has been painting with passion since childhood, a love of art that has flourished throughout his life. Having lived near the breathtaking fortress since early childhood, it is surely no coincidence that his artistic vision is so influenced by its surroundings. His stunning creations capture the imagination and transport viewers to a world where colours dance in harmony and emotions are vividly expressed through intricate brushstrokes and extraordinary techniques. Each of Ivo's pieces tells a different, entrancing story, inviting viewers to engage with them on multiple complex levels that provoke thought and reflection. Despite not speaking English nor French, Ivo greeted us warmly with a smile and a genuine spirit, radiating an openness that transcended verbal communication and made us feel instantly welcomed and at ease.

Even with the language barrier, we made every effort to understand each other, relying on heartfelt gestures and expressive facial expressions that conveyed more than words ever could. This beautiful exchange of ideas felt incredibly genuine, creating a memorable connection that we would cherish and reflect upon long after our visit. Ivo's approachable manner and the captivating nature of his artwork fostered an atmosphere of mutual respect and admiration. It was a poignant reminder that art can bridge gaps and foster understanding in unexpected and delightful ways, enabling people from different backgrounds and cultures to find common ground. Our interactions with him reinforced the idea that creativity is a universal language capable of resonating with people's hearts, transcending any barriers that may exist.

Drawing profound inspiration from the stunning Klis Fortress, Ivo's artwork beautifully captures the site's rich and varied history, as well as its natural beauty. With each brushstroke, he displays a unique style that captures the essence of this extraordinary place.

The fortress rises majestically on a rocky hilltop, attracting attention and admiration while offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. This grand setting evokes a sense of timeless beauty and a deep appreciation for the art and history that have unfolded here over the centuries. It is a place where nature and history converge to form a tapestry of sights and stories that inspire all who visit.

Within his small studio, Ivo creates also captivating clay magnets, drawing inspiration from the fortress for those who express an interest when visiting the church.
