The word 'aperitivo' comes from the Latin 'aperitivus,' meaning 'to open.' It captures a deeper essence that goes beyond simply starting a meal; it represents an invitation, a gentle nudge to open up one’s heart and mind to the experiences that lie ahead. The term evokes the idea of opening up a conversation and a palate, making it a delightful prelude to a meal or an event, setting the stage for an extraordinary experience. The exhibition entitled APERITIVO is brought to life by four talented artists who embody its title in their unique ways. They gather inside the Old Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs in Gordes, known as one of the most beautiful villages in France, famed for its picturesque views and charming ambience that captivates both locals and visitors alike, inviting them to immerse themselves in a sensory adventure. Frédéric Duarte, Karim Rahman, Thomas Petit, and Ikou Tschüss each bring their unique flair and creativity to the experience, seamlessly intertwining their artistic visions, creating a tapestry of creative expression that resonates with the very spirit of community and collaboration.
Frédéric Duarte and Karim Rahman are a dynamic duo of ceramists under the creative name Hors-series who share a ceramic workshop nestled in Murs, a quaint and small village in the lush Luberon region of France. Together, they inspire each other to push their artistic limits, constantly exploring new techniques and ideas, creating ceramics filled with passion, innovation, and a splash of whimsy that speak to the soul. For this exhibition, they present the ceramics for everyday living, including plates, pitchers, vases, candle holders, multiform bowls, cups, and tumblers. Thomas Petit is a Paris-based graphic designer who presents playful cards, vibrant and colourful poster, coasters, and unique dishcloth textiles that spark joy and bring a touch of artistry to everyday life. And Ikou Tschüss presents well-crafted objects with natural fibres and recycled materials including breadbasket, cushions, scarves, shopper bags, designed pouffes, and other fascinating objects which are not only functional but also beautifully crafted, each piece telling a story of sustainability and eco-friendly environment creativity.
Aperitivo is an experiential exhibition where social occasions are centred around lively conversation, where the drinks, food, and art are simple yet elegant, beautifully curated for sharing with friends, family, and the wider public. The concept of 'aperitivismo' emphasises warmth, connection, and the joy of coming together in a space that breathes creativity and friendliness. During this spirited gathering, the term 'aperitivo' refers not only to the delicious and delightful drinks that kick off the evening the cocktails, wines, and refreshments that tantalise the taste buds but also to the warm invitation to engage in lively discussions that celebrate creativity and artistic expression. The event showcases an array of textiles, everyday living ceramics, and graphic designs that highlight form, sign, and colour, celebrating the beauty and diversity of artistic practices. This multifaceted approach encompasses not only visual artistry, but also shared practices and craftsmanship that bring people together, encouraging meaningful dialogue and interaction. The four distinct practices are graciously brought together in an inspiring display, inviting visitors to savour and absorb the richness of creativity infused into every moment, transcending the ordinary and lifting the spirit in a celebration of culture, art and community.
