An Vanderlinden is a Belgian visual artist lives and work in Diest, Belgium. She was born in Beringen, a town in the Belgian province of Limburg renowned for its long-standing coal mining history. This unique and rich context provides an integral foundation for her work and artistic journey, offering inspiration and materials. Using coal collected from the remains of the former Beringen mining site, she has developed her signature paint featuring a diverse range of vibrant, self-made pigments spanning an array of stunning colours, including transparent, glossy browns and intense, deep mineral blacks. When applied in meticulous layers and combined thoughtfully with raw coal fragments, these materials create visually striking surfaces in which depth, reflection and varied texture interact in compelling ways.
The interplay of depth, reflection and varied texture creates a compelling and mesmerising effect, that invites viewers to explore further. Vanderlinden's captivating paintings have an extraordinary ability to change and evolve depending on the viewer's position and the ever-changing natural light. They continuously reveal new colours and subtle nuances that stimulate the senses. Deeply rooted in an industrial past, her work transforms utilitarian and ultimately abandoned coal into both medium and subject. This thoughtful transformation carries traces of geological time, the weight of human labour and the considerable energy expended in the creative process, echoing the stories of this place. At the core of her artistic practice lies a rich exploration of the latent luminosity within black. This is not merely characterised as a representation of absence, but as a powerful carrier of light. Reflection and depth converge to generate a subtle yet persistent visual radiance that resonates on multiple levels, drawing viewers into a deeper understanding of the material and the conceptual when they engage with her art.

Vanderlinden completed her tudies and holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from PIKOH in Hasselt, Belgium. She then pursued a postgraduate specialisation in Painting at the National Higher Institute for Fine Arts (NHISKA) in Antwerp. This academic journey not only enriched both her technical skills and her artistic vision but also instilled in her a deep understanding of the nuances of artistic expression and the historical contexts that shape contemporary art.
In addition to her substantial academic background, she has been awarded the Culture Prize Biënnale Cultuurvuur 2024 by the Flemish Minister-President and Minister of Culture, Jan Jambon. Since 2012, she has consistently exhibited her creative work in various exhibitions, showcasing her unique creativity and innovative approaches to a broad audience, while also contributing to significant discussions within the art community and beyond.
