Over the years, Sebastião Salgado has established himself as one of the most prominent figures in contemporary humanist and documentary photography. His powerful images have illuminated the human experience, transforming our perception of the world in the process. However, the man behind the camera has led a life far beyond the photographs he has taken around the world. Salgado remained faithful to black and white as a language of truth and restraint, a deliberate choice that enables viewers to engage with the emotional weight of his subjects. Just as he devoted his life to exposing social and environmental injustice, he consistently affirmed his profound faith in humankind. Through his images, he bore witness to the wounds of our century, revealing stories that demand attention and action. "I would like those who look at my images to feel that humanity is noble everywhere", he said! A testament to his belief in the dignity of all people, which is beautifully captured in each frame.

"Photography should be an act of commitment. It's a way to contribute something to the world, to denounce injustices, to show what is invisible, to make things visible." Sebastião Salgado

This homage exhibition retraces Salgado's most emblematic photographic series. Through these images, he sought to reveal the beauty of the world and give a face to everyone. The exhibition also showcases his most recent work on Paris, which is being presented to the public for the first time at the Hôtel de Ville de Paris. In 2024, the City of Paris invited Salgado to photograph the capital for its end-of-year greeting card. Although initially hesitant as this was not the kind of invitation he was accustomed to receiving, he nevertheless accepted. Salgado chose Paris as his adopted home, a city that deeply resonates with his artistic sensibilities. He embodies the profound bond between Brazil and France, a connection forged through affection, shared values and culture, evident in his work. Every morning, he would stroll along the Canal Saint-Martin, attentive to the unique light drifting along the water's edge, capturing fleeting moments that often go unnoticed. Paris nourished his vision, infusing his work with a unique perspective, and he carried the city with him wherever he went, a silent muse on his travels. Moreover, his photography reflects not only the city's physical landscapes and architectural grandeur, but also the ephemeral moments of daily life that speak to the heart of humanity. Through his lens, Paris's vibrant streets, lively cafés and diverse people come alive in a tapestry of emotions and stories, showcasing the city's soul. Each click of the shutter is a testament to his deep admiration for the city and its indomitable spirit. Thus, the exhibition serves as both a showcase of his work and an exploration of the intricate relationships that bind a photographer to his environment, a celebration of art, culture and the profoundly personal journey of witnessing the world through one's own eyes.

"Quand je suis arrivé à Paris, sa beauté m'a touché en plein cœur", a déclaré Sebastião Salgado.
"When I arrived in Paris, I was moved by its beauty" said Sebastião Salgado.
Alongside his remarkable photographs in the exhibition, there is also a vibrant collection of paintings featuring his beloved son, Rodrigo, who was born with Down's syndrome. Furthermore, this touching depiction is accentuated by details of his and his wife Lélia's impactful joint project, the Instituto Terra, where an impressive 3.5 million trees have been planted. Salgado devoted tireless efforts of himself to this noble cause, standing as tangible proof that the process of transforming arid land into a vibrant, thriving forest is not merely a utopian dream. It is indeed a practical reality, showcasing that it is possible to restore nature while simultaneously improving people's lives. This powerful message reminds us that together, we can protect our planet and build a sustainable future for the generations to come.
